Today is World Patient Safety Day.
This year’s theme is improving diagnosis for patient safety. Accurate and timely diagnosis of conditions play a pivotal role in improving patient safety.
Shockingly, researchers estimate that up to 70% of people with COPD may not be properly diagnosed. This may be related to limited access to spirometry tests and because COPD symptoms can be similar to other lung conditions.
Early diagnosis and treatment of COPD can help:
- Slow down the progression of the disease
- Improve breathing and overall lung function
- Prevent exacerbations and hospitalizations
With timely and accurate diagnosis of COPD, we can help patients live more active and fulfilling lives.

Breathing Exercises
For people with chronic lung diseases like COPD and asthma, breathing exercises can help you breathe easier and make your lungs more efficient.
Relax, bring your shoulders down, close your eyes, and try these two exercises.
Pursed lip breathing helps slow down your breathing and keeps your airways open longer. It takes less effort to breathe and improves the air exchange in your lungs. Start by breathing in through your nose for two seconds. Then pucker or purse your lips, as if you’re going to blow out a candle, and breathe out slowly through your pursed lips for four seconds.
Belly breathing can train your diaphragm to do more of the work needed for breathing. Place one hand on your abdomen and the other on your chest. Breathe in through your nose and focus on feeling your abdomen rise under your hand. Breathe out slowly through pursed lips and feel your abdomen fall under your hand.
Try practicing these exercises for 5 to 10 minutes each day.
